Midlands Apiaries prides itself on delivering high-quality wholesale Mānuka honey to businesses across the world; however, this also comes with a huge responsibility. Our bees are the building blocks of running a smooth, turnkey honey operation, and we take great care in protecting our essential monofloral Mānuka honey workers.
Proudly one of the largest South Island beekeeping operations in the mid-Canterbury region, Midlands Bees are an integral part of our year-round Mānuka honey supply.
This article will explore how our bees produce our world-famous Mānuka honey and how we ensure our bees remain protected. .
First and foremost, we’re all very aware that bees are integral to the Mānuka Honey production process. As the most important part of producing New Zealand’s rarest honey, bees are perhaps the most important aspect of Midlands Apiaries’ wholesale Mānuka Honey operation.
Our strategically located bushes of Mānuka flowers are situated in some of the most remote regions across New Zealand. As a flower with a narrow bloom window, it’s vital that we ensure our honey bees have the safest and most prosperous environment to extract the unique nectar when blooming occurs. There is a very specific process to how bees make Mānuka honey; as a result, it’s important that we do our best to ensure their environment stays as stable as possible.
The Mānuka flower has been noted historically for being very sensitive to excessively warm and populated areas. As a means of ensuring a flourishing Mānuka forest, these flowers are commonly isolated away from humans to ensure little disturbance occurs.
Wild pollinators such as birds, flies, and bumblebees tend not to pollinate a specific crop(s) and are noted for being less efficient than honey bees. Natural bee communities (or feral bee colonies) can also support pollination efforts as they possess floral constancy - or the act of solely seeking one type of flower.
Living in trees, buildings, caves or man-made structures, feral colonies can significantly increase pollination if their population is large enough.
Bee abundance is essential to the pollination of the Mānuka flower. Managed beehives can assess agricultural landscapes and be moved to ensure that pollination is maximised, whereas feral bee colonies cannot be moved, reducing their pollination efficiency for extracting Mānuka. The wild bee can be a great resource for pollination but should not be relied upon where bee abundance is required to deliver maximum Mānuka nectar crop results.
Aside from our comprehensive R&D into bee health and hive management, there are several other aspects of our operation that we maintain to ensure a year-round pure Mānuka honey supply.
